The Computational Electromagnetic Laboratory (CEL) facilitates research based on ab initio computational engineering of novel optical material. The main research directions are in optical metamaterials and optoelectronic devices that can guide, trap or modulate light at the nanoscopic and microscopic length scales.

These artificial materials can provide new optical applications including invisibility devices, energy accumulation at the nanoscale for high efficiency photovoltaic elements, trapping of light and simulation of celestial phenomenon (black holes) in the laboratory and development of extremely fast (>1THz) basic optoelectronic elements and compound logic gates.
