B.S. Advising

For students in their sophomore year, please pay attention to the following:
  • Take ENGR 221 (Elec. Engr. And Circuits I) in the fall if possible. Take this class no later than the winter quarter of this year.
  • Take ELEN 223 (Circuits II) the quarter after taking ENGR 221. You have three quarters to get through both ENGR 221 and ELEN 223 to prepare for ELEN 224 (Circuits III) at the start of your junior year.
  • Take ENGR 220 (Statics and Strength of Materials) and ENGL 303 (Technical Writing) sometime during your sophomore year. You need to take both of these classes before your senior year and you won't have time for them during your junior year.
  • Take ELEN 232 (Introduction to Digital Design) and ELEN 242 (Introduction to Microprocessors) during your sophomore year.

For students in their junior year, please pay attention to the following:
  • Take ENGR 222 (Thermodynamics) and ENGL 363 (Technical Presentations) during the winter quarter. You need to take both of these classes before your senior year and this is the only quarter when you will have time during this year.

For students in their senior year, please pay attention to the following:
  • Your advisor for your senior year will be the Program Chair. He/She becomes your advisor in the spring quarter of your junior year as you make plans for your senior year.
  • For your ELEN Senior Options, you must choose two and your choices are:
    • ELEN 437 (Microfabrication Principles) and ELEN 439 (Microfabrication Laboratory) in the fall quarter.
    • ELEN 471 (Automatic Control Systems) and ELEN 479 (Automatic Control Systems Laboratory) in the fall quarter.
    • ELEN 461 (Communication Systems) and ELEN 469 (Communications Laboratory) in the winter quarter.
    • ELEN 481 (Power Systems) and ELEN 489 (Electrical Energy Conversion Laboratory) in the winter quarter.
  • For your ELEN Directed Elective, you must choose two and your choices are:
    • ELEN 423 (Embedded Systems) in the fall quarter.
    • ELEN 472 (Introduction to Digital Control) in the winter quarter.
    • ELEN 463 (Optical Communication Systems) in the spring quarter.
    • ELEN 482 (Power Systems Design and Analysis) in the spring quarter.
    • ELEN 433 (Optoelectronics) in the spring quarter.
  • For your Math/Science Elective, you choices are:
    • Any 300 or 400 level MATH, STAT, or PHYS course approved by your advisor.
    • The most popular choices are:
      • MATH 308 (Introduction to Linear Algebra), typically offered in the winter quarter.
      • MATH 311 (Discrete Mathematics I), typically offered in the fall and spring quarters.
      • MATH 414 (Numerical Analysis), typically offered in the fall quarter.
      • MATH 415 (Numerical Analysis), typically offered in the winter quarter.
      • STAT 405 (Statistical Methods), typically offered in the winter quarter.
      • PHYS 465 (Physics of Sound), typically offered every other winter quarter.
    • Please note that if you choose to take a MATH or STAT class for this elective, then you are just 3 semester hours short of a Math minor.
