Thomas L. Smith

OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD for MECHANICAL & INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING: 1999

In recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the engineering profession.

Thomas L. Smith graduated from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1965 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. He received his M.B.A. from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1967.

Following completion of his M.B.A., Mr. Smith began what has become a distinguished engineering career in the petrochemical industry when he accepted a job in the Human Resources Division of Gulf Oil Corporation. From 1967 to 1976, he held numerous positions with Gulf Oil Corporation in Houston, Texas, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Port Arthur, Texas.

From 1976 to 1985, he held managerial positions in numerous areas of the Human Resources Division of Gulf Refining and Marketing Company. These areas included benefits, labor relations, training, litigation coordination/compensation, and employment.

Mr. Smith was Human Resources Manager of the Chevron Products Company Chemical Plant in Port Arthur, Texas, from 1985 to 1995. In 1995, he became Human Resources Manager of the Chevron Chemical Company Chemical Plant in Port Arthur, Texas. He currently holds this position.

During his distinguished career, Mr. Smith has actively supported the College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech University. He is a Past Chairman of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Advisory Council and a Director of the Louisiana Tech University Engineering and Science Foundation.
