Elton Calhoun, Jr.
OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD for MECHANICAL ENGINEERING: 2009
In recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the engineering profession.
Mr. Elton Calhoun was born in Trout, Louisiana, in 1945 and went on to receive a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana Polytechnic University in 1969. He was a linebacker and field goal kicker on the Louisiana Tech Football Team.
Mr. Calhoun accepted his first job as a mechanical engineer with Union Carbide and moved with his wife, Ann, to Victoria, Texas, in June of 1969. He worked for Union Carbide for 7.5 years as a production engineer in maintenance/reliability and with Union Carbide’s corporate office as a maintenance/reliability manager.
In November of 1976, Mr. Calhoun and a partner formed Sparkman Industries where he served as general manager. In 1981 Regional Steel Products, Inc. was formed as a sister company to Sparkman Industries. He took over management of Regional Steel Products, Inc. with his wife, Ann, in 1983 and became the owner and president in 1986. Under his leadership, the company has grown from 6 to over 40 employees, providing quality steel and metal products to South-Central Texas and to companies as far away as Jamaica and South America.
The Victoria, Texas Chamber of Commerce recognized Mr. Calhoun as “Citizen of the Year” for 2008 due to his long history of community service, including President of the Rotary Club, President of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, President of the Victoria College Foundation Board, President of the American Builders and Contractors-Texas Mid Coast Chapter, President of the Victoria Country Club, Commissioner of the Navigation District for the Port of Victoria, Board member of the YMCA, and Deacon, Elder, and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Calhoun and his wife, Ann, have two daughters, Sherry and Jennifer, and one son, Craig. Mr. Calhoun enjoys golf, fishing and travel.
