Office of Women in Science and Engineering
The Office for Women in Science and Engineering (OWISE) has a goal of creating a culture of success for women in engineering and science. Housed in the Office of the Dean, the OWISE Office and programs aim to improve the climate, increase retention and provide professional development and leadership opportunities for engineering and science faculty and students.
The OWISE Office administered the National Science Foundation ADVANCE PAID grant for the College of Engineering and Science and its ADVANCEing Faculty Program.

Dr. Teresa Murray, Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering
Terry and her student will receive a FASEB MARC travel award. This is a mentor/mentee award for promoting minority access to research careers (MARC). The students must be from an underrepresented group in biomedical sciences. The Federation of Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) is a large umbrella group that represents numerous societies in the U.S.
Faculty Mentoring Program
Research shows that mentoring makes a significant difference for both tenure-track faculty, as well as faculty who are moving into new responsibilities or research areas. It has also shown that mentoring is beneficial to those who serve as mentors, providing new opportunities for collaboration and development of leadership skills, as well as the institution, by positively impacting new faculty members’ professional development and job satisfaction.

The ADVANCEing Faculty Program in the College of Engineering and Science (COES) at Louisiana Tech University strives to create a culture of success for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through a college-wide, systemic, sustainable approach. This approach provides a framework and resources to educate and enable all faculty to participate in a supportive work environment that enhances job satisfaction, research productivity and retention.
The goals of the ADVANCEing Faculty Program are to:
1) strengthen the climate by reducing the isolation of faculty, instituting faculty training and mentoring programs, and examining work-life policies;
2) increase retention of faculty, through increased research successes, career networking, and exposure to role models;
3) enhance management training, as well as promotion and leadership opportunities, for faculty.
The ADVANCEing Faculty Program includes the following components: Faculty Lunches, Training Modules for Administrators and Faculty, Mentoring Program, Worklife Policies for Life Transitions, Grant Writing Program, Career Networking Awards, Distinguished Lectureship Program, Executive Coaching Program, Career Development Workshops, and a Women in STEM Awards Banquet.
The ADVANCEing Faculty Program is supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Partnership for Adaptation, Implementation and Dissemination (PAID) Grant under NSF’s ADVANCE Program.
