Hardy Lift Station Wastewater Storage Facility

The Hardy Lift Station is a large sewer lift station in Shreveport’s Queensborough Neighborhood. In recent years, the station has been found to become over-burdened during periods of heavy rainfall. The purpose of this project is to design an above-ground storage tank where wastewater can be held temporarily during the rainfall event and then released gradually back into the system once the storm has subsided. For the sewer lift station design project, students have handled the following engineering design Practices will apply to this project: Pump Sizing, Wet Well Sizing, Gravity Sewer Pipeline Design, Sewer Force Main Design, and Structural Design of the Wet Weather Lift Station, including the foundation designs of the wet well and wastewater storage tank.

Structural Design Services for a New Warehouse Project in Wapakoneta, OH

The project is to design a 100 ft×200 ft warehouse in Wapakoneta, Ohio, for the Pratt Wapakoneta Mill. This warehouse will be used to store non-hazardous supplies. The budget for this project is $2,700,000. The design scope of this project includes the load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic, rain, snow, and ice loads, etc.), designs of foundation (spread footing or pile foundation), slabs-on-grade, structural steel primary and secondary framing, steel connections, and parking lots for large trucks. Various software programs are utilized in the design process for structural analyses and to check and validate the hand calculation results. Those software programs include RAM, Revit, AutoCAD, and Mathcad. In the load calculations, the ASCE 7-22 design manual is followed.

Blanchard-Latex Road Bridge Replacement (RECALL 300279) in Caddo Parish

The Blanchard-Latex road bridge replacement is a project located in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. It crosses over Shettleworth Bayou Creek. The existing bridge is being replaced for its aging and safety issues, and thus it needs to be re-designed and built. The design work started up with the review of available geotechnical reports and boring logs, and possible coordination of geotechnical investigations and topographic surveys. In hydraulics analysis, watershed boundary and drainage area characteristics are determined. Hydrologic analyses following Louisiana DOTD Hydraulic Manual guidelines are conducted for the peak runoff for the 10-, 50-, and 100-year stormwater flows. HEC-18 hydraulic analyses are conducted for the stream erosion control. The geometric design for the bridge is completed in accordance with the LADOTD Hydraulics Manual as well as USDOT Federal Highway Administration Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings Design Manual. The design team utilizes primarily AASHTO Bridge Design Manual and LADOTD Bridge Design Manual for the traffic load calculations, designs of the structural components of the bridges. The team has completed as well the pile foundation design, and slope stability of the bridge abutment. Preliminary cost estimating work is done as the last design part of the project.

EMC & Sieper Water System Consolidation

This project is about the consolidation of the EMC and Sieper area water systems. The two separate water systems were both designed and built by nonprofit corporations, and organized under the laws of state of Louisiana and domiciled by Rapids Parish, Louisiana. The project work includes the design and construction of an interconnection between the EMC Water System and the Sieper Area water system. It also involves the analysis and modification of the well and tank controls throughout the combined system. The design team needs to determine the size and route of the interconnection pipe, performs a hydraulic analysis of the system to ensure that the interconnection pipe can handle the required flow and capacity needs and that the system can handle the 12′ hydraulic gradient between the two systems. For the well modification designs, the well control setpoints are designed for the water wells of the newly combined system to maintain proper water pressure and stored capacity. At the end of the project, construction drawings and details for the project are prepared. The WaterCAD software is utilized to determine client and node ground elevations.

US 165 Intersection Improvements Near Medical Park Drive

This project is to design and determine the needs for turn lanes on US 165 and restricts existing crossovers with raised islands to alleviate traffic congestion and mitigation of crashes. A series of proposed design solutions have been explored to find the safest and most effective alternative. The best fit for the intersection would be a R-Cut intersection design. Re-design work of the intersection includes geometric layout, pavement design, and drainage design. A construction traffic schedule and traffic control operations are determined based on the design decisions made. The design solution is eventually evaluated for cost-effectiveness check by performing estimating and cost benefit analyses.

LA 792 improvement in Webster Parish

LA 792 in Webster Parish is experiencing a high number of run-off-the-road accidents along a 90° curve in the roadway. Motorists drove too fast, driving off the road and crashing whenever they encountered the curve and cannot slow down enough to safely navigate it. This location needs to be investigated to provide the most cost-effective solution to reduce the number of run-off-the-road accidents. The capstone senior design team investigated the location and crash history, determined the cause of the run-off-the-road accidents, and found the best/most cost-effective way to reduce these crashes. Roadway borings were reviewed, and pavement design were conducted for the proposed widening or realignment of the roadway following the DOTD Pavement Design Guidelines. The existing two drainage structures were evaluated and resized. The hydraulic designs and analyses followed the DOTD Hydraulics Manual.

I-20 Widening

The existing I-20 section in Monroe between Stella St. and Thomas Rd. suffers from congestion and safety issues during peak traffic hours due to an increase in capacity demand. The capstone senior design project is to increase the capacity and raise the level of service of the I-20 segment. In the selected design alternative, the third lane is designed between on and off ramps for both of the east and westbound lanes. Analysis of the increased traffic capacity level is conducted for the design option. A jointed reinforced concrete and asphalt shoulder pavement designs are completed. Drainage analysis is carried out to check the capacity of the existing drainage system. Design efforts are put forth for a construction plan along with the planning of the right of way limits, a construction sequence, and a temporary traffic control plan are made. Preliminary estimating work is done for the cost and time frame of the selected design alternatives.
