Over 500 high school students gather for annual Engineering & Science Day
Louisiana Tech played host Wednesday to over 500 area junior and senior high school students interested in careers in math, science and engineering during the university’s annual Engineering and Science Day.
The event, sponsored by Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science, is designed to whet the appetites of those students interested in a career in one of the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering or math). What makes the event unique is that Louisiana Tech students currently enrolled in engineering and science majors do all of the heavy lifting for the event, including extending the invitations and arranging the eye-popping demonstrations.
Dr. Jenna Carpenter, associate dean for administration and strategic initiatives in Tech’s College of Engineering and Science, says the event is a great way for our students to share their enthusiasm and give back.
“E&S Day provides an opportunity for high school students to learn firsthand about the opportunities here at Louisiana Tech in engineering and science, talk to our majors, and participate in hands-on learning activities.”
Students from high schools in south Arkansas, northwest Louisiana, northeast Louisiana, and as far south as New Iberia were on hand for the opening ceremony in Louisiana Tech’s Howard Auditorium.
Afterwards, the students were taken on tours and were given the opportunity to visit the College’s outstanding research facilities including the Institute for Micromanufacturing and the Biomedical Engineering Center. They also viewed student projects such as those built by freshman engineering students and learned what types of careers are possible with an engineering or science education.
