Construction Engineering Technology is a great discipline for you if you want to solve practical problems and help create the infrastructure of the future. Construction engineering technologists manage and supervise the conversion of engineering and architectural plans from ideas to reality. You’ll get practical experience using surveying equipment and a thorough understanding of theories that drive innovation in construction and surveying in our program. You’ll have the opportunity to expand your expertise by earning a certificate in surveying through guided courses.

As a Louisiana Tech Construction Engineering Technology student, you’ll get hands-on experience using field equipment and estimating and bidding on projects. Student organizations like the Associated General Contractors of America, the North American Society for Trenchless Technology, and the American Society of Civil Engineers allow you to attend professional conferences, compete in hands-on activities, and network with world-renowned industry leaders. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in research through the Trenchless Technology Center, which focuses on underground utilities.

You’ll spend your senior year working with a team to estimate and bid on a large-scale project and present your work to industry sponsors at the College of Engineering and Science Design and Research Conference.

Most of our graduates go directly to work in the field, providing leadership in private and public sector construction. Many graduates spend their careers on job sites, working in the field, interfacing with work crews and contractors, building roads, bridges, buildings, and levees, and managing the installation of utility systems. Graduates of this program find success in heavy highway transportation, construction, utility, oil and gas, renewable energy, public works, and even biology, chemistry, and physics businesses.

Survey Option Highlights

Students enrolled in the Survey Option supplement the robust Construction Engineering Technology curriculum with 30 hours of surveying, mapping, and real property courses. These courses complete the educational requirements for survey licensure as required by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. This qualification doubles the employment opportunities for students after graduation.

Licensed surveyors’ salaries compare very favorably, and, in some cases, exceed those of licensed engineers.

Surveyors are licensed by the same board as engineers and work closely with attorneys, engineers, architects, and developers.

Surveying work is comprised of a mix of indoor and outdoor activities using interesting technologies, as well as historical documents and real estate and boundary law.

Job Opportunities

Professional surveyors measure and analyze angles and distances between property corner markers on a piece of land, whether that land is in a city,  underwater, or on a mountain. Surveyors work with a variety of stakeholders, including landowners, city planners, construction engineers, architects, and lawyers. A variety of jobs are open to surveyors.
